I was sitting dead on the sidewalk, I’ve walked around thirty miles
I left you on the left side of street, my heart was stuck on the right
Traveling like an empty shell of dust and times long past
Weary in the night neon light, disgusted but willing to last
I was thinking about your tambourine, your clothes and smell of your hair
I hardly knew a good man here, I was casting a nervous glare
Sitting wishing the pain would end, secretly craving for life
Better than the dirt I know and shorter than highways of strife
I smoked another cigarette when I caught a glimpse of your eyes
You played a golden trumpet saying how come you got so wise
Took the pen and wrote me down a poem to learn by heart
Many here are sore and depressed, but few of us cure it with art
I raised myself from the curb and I saw angels sharing a drink
Talking loud on people too proud to admit they fell from the brink
Madness, sadness easy friends, if they come around once more
Pass your lady a secret note and bolt all the doors with love
Someone gave me this old key, I believe it’s a magic thing
I was thinking on all you said to me, I believe we lost the ring
Don’t you cry, if you allow I can make you a paper one
I see your dress and it gets me obsessed with pearls and diamonds and sun
If I meet you later on when everything’s settled and free
Gypsy eyes, you hypnotize all the fools except for me
Don’t talk to me, just walk with me, I’ll show you a couple streets
I once knew in the wintertime, all of them were neat
Tears fell from your tired eyes you cried to the depths of my coat
Says how come we’re doomed to drown while sin and falsehood float
Said just take my hand, relax, we’ll drown like we never knew
Score of life, the ruby knife and things I could sell to you
I’m a thief of consciousness, child, I’m precious to the streets
So don’t you hang your head down low and don’t you ever weep
We will make it one more time, there’s nothing to hold us down
Turn the shadows upside down, walk out and enjoy the clowns
Hear the singer sing a tune or see how a poet writes his part
Nothing in this world can make two hearts like ours stand apart
Hours pass with wine and smoke, the guitars you enjoy
Simple thing to make you content, I’ll just show you a brand new toy
We walked down where death alone reigns a quiet world
Cemeteries don’t turn you on, I believe you said it before
Didn’t spoke a word to me, I was reading quotes and truths
Finally written down in stone, just like they always should
Some were wise and some just words of breakfast quality
Asked me must we stay down here, this cold is getting to me
Feel my hand, it’s always warm, don’t worry about the frost
Running down my spine all the time, it’s a feeling of something lost
Can we find a table here, a waiter is coming our way
Dressed in white he’s asking me what will I order today
Have a cup of coffee, sir, you look so faint and blue
Your lady might wish something more, pour her simple truth
Hazel had her drink real quick, and as the truth revealed
She understood that nothing’s right, and everything’s unreal
Have we met in earlier life, or have we met at all
Moon and sun danced before her eyes, cathedral bells did toll
Something’s changed within the street, can sense it in the air
So much trouble waiting for us, much pain we have to take
Everything’s invented, dear, discovered on the run
Everything’s OK with me, but I’m losing faith in guns
Heaven take me to a world where everything is plain
Gifts of new today of love are yesterday’s disdain
There’s no path for you to walk except the path of light
Though darkness welcomes you so warm into the womb of night
Neons of the city gaze, so alluring and intense
Tempt you for the first time child, you’re making little sense
Want to run just everywhere where the lights are opening up
Want to drown in every song, in every poisoned cup
I must keep your heart restrained, you’ll never give away
All the spirits that you have to such a darkened way
Second thrills and minute deals are rotten like the dreams
Of all losers, beggars, users, you can hear their painful screams
Begging for the torture’s end, night is no fair room
Underneath the surface sleeps the cruelty of the moon
Time for true romance, for sure, but also time of fear
On the edge of circling lights you watch me disappear
Can I catch your hand again, go back to city schemes
Thought I’ve heard some angels weeping over missing wings
Thought I lost you in the night, but here you come again
Want to show me bruises of experience and explain
Why you’re tempted by the shadows of escaping night
Must I keep you close to madness, easy friend of mine
Only she’s a helping hand when tramps and hobos ride
Hand in hand with you, my angel, you can never hide
From the ashes of tomorrow thrown right in your face
Bars and taverns of the city ain’t your kind of place
I’ve been through it, I’ve seen through it, now I’m far from home
Dealing with my solitude and a heart of stone
Here’s my suitcase, hand it to me, we’re bound to ride again
Catch the train tomorrow morning, too much smoke and stain
Gotten to my veins and hurried right up tired head
When you think about me, baby, don’t you get so sad
There is nothing I would change in this hopeless life of mine
Sitting on the sidewalk daily watching birds fly by
Watching people throw me dimes or spit into my hat
I’ve seen lots of men and birds, on many curbs I’ve sat
Streets don’t want me out of here, city claims its own
Beggar of a million streets and his little whore
It’s that simple in its eyes, we’re nothing more than that
Though I’ve seen a lot of blood and a lot of blood I bled
Down the drain and in the outskirts, marginal reality
Side line, minor, secondary, creatures never free
Peripheral in the mirror of another day
We are merely stones, my love, getting in the way
Hazel I adore you so I can’t forget your love
Kisses, breezes of a body naked, full of hope
In my bed you were the brightest star of galaxy
I must get out now, my love, and I need company
Out into the nights of forests, nights unkind and wild
I will take myself a wandering, and I take you, child
You will get to know a kind of life you’re missing here
Giant moon in silent trees and voice of god so near
I will miss the guitars surely, I’ll miss your melody
Took me high above the rooftops in the city dreams
I remember you so vaguely, imprecisely true
I can’t see the fragments of delusion you called truth
Somewhere far before our walk, before we met at all
I remember bums of magic selling me their souls
Said I was a thief, remember, said I’m one of them
Gathering just silent movies, pockets full of sand
Everything that fooled me was a part of greater plot
Everything that schooled me is a gift I’m thankful for
Someone said I’ve got no future, with this I can’t agree
There’s a mean old spirit waiting, howling deep inside of me
I can find some happiness, despite the lost year’s pain
I can learn your easy song and recall your favorite name
You belonged to someone else, well I belonged to storms
Baying over city nights, the nights I once adored
I was riding with the thunders just to see your face
Once I thought I finally found you, you left without no trace
Took me ages to explain the place I’m coming from
Took you seconds to accept my broken heart as home
I guess nothing stops us now, our hearts will roam the sky
Every night when lightning sings the blues of our goodbye
Every dawn that kisses you and lays you by my side
Is the dawn when it could end, the dawn when I could die
